In response to feedback about the capacities of the breakout rooms at ARA2025, we're pleased to say that the 2026 venue will offer 4 large breakout rooms, of almost equal size. Whilst it's impossible to predict how many people will attend each session, and seating will still be on a first-come, first-served basis, we hope the challenges of last year will be solved, and everyone will have a comfortable experience. Yes, the venue is fully accessible. If you have specific accessibility requirements, please let us know during registration. We also offer a quiet room during the conference for anyone who needs it. Our Wednesday social venue, which is away from the main conference hotel, is also fully accessible. Please return to the website for the latest. Yes, we can accept changes to your registration without charge, up 14 days (inclusive) before the conference. Within 13 days (inclusive) of the conference, substitution of one delegate for another can be made at the discretion of the Organiser. Speakers are expected to attend and present in-person. Please do not use the delegate registration links below. If you haven't received your invitation email by 13 March, please email [araconference@opening-doors.org.uk](mailto:araconference@opening-doors.org.uk).  Delegate registration for the ARA 2026 Conference is now open via the link at the bottom of this page. Registration for the conference is online only. You can register as an individual or as a group up to 5 people. Please read the information below before proceeding to the registration form. **CARD**: our preferred payment method is online by credit/debit card at point of registration. If you or your organisation is unable to make online card payments, you can select one of the following payment options at the end of the registration process: **BANK TRANSFER**: If you don't have a purchase order (or require an invoice to raise a purchase order) please select the 'Bank Transfer' option. A purchase order number can be added later and invoices re-issued (once a PO number has been added, it cannot be changed). **PURCHASE ORDER**: If you have a purchase order please select this option and enter the purchase order number. This can only be used with the final PO number ('*TBC*' won't be accepted). Please note that automatic confirmation emails may go to spam folders initially. If needed, please whitelist the following domain with your provider:  **opening-doors.org.uk** to ensure our emails reach you safely.  If you are registering as a member, **please make sure you have your membership number to hand before beginning your registration**. For membership enquiries please contact Lorraine Logan on +44 (0) 1823 327077 and select Option 1, or email [membership@archives.org.uk](mailto:membership@archives.org.uk). Alongside the main programme, you're welcome to join us for the Civic Welcome Reception and/or the Thursday evening Gala Dinner & Awards, both of which are great opportunities to connect with colleagues from across the sector. If you need a hand getting sign-off, we've put together a model business case letter you can adapt and send to your employer. The ARA Annual Conference is outstanding value: your full delegate fee covers accommodation, meals, and an intensive three-day programme. We want as many members as possible to benefit from it. However, we know that attending isn't always straightforward, whether it's the cost, securing time away from work, or both. That's why the Conference Committee offers bursaries and day-attendance rates, so that financial or practical barriers don't stand between you and the conference. *Bursaries are available to those who have not received a conference bursary in the last three years (i.e. in Bristol 2025, Birmingham 2024, Belfast 2023).* There are five types of bursaries available this year. The ARA Member Full Bursary covers full Conference attendance (three-day programme, two nights’ accommodation at the Radisson Blu, Glasgow and three meals a day) and travel expenses of up to £100. To apply, you must be an individual member of ARA and have been a member for at least one year, and who is, at the closing date for applications, either a student member, a full member, an overseas member or is registered on the conservation certificate course. Applications open on **Monday, 18 May 2026,** and will close at **5:00 pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026**. **One** full bursary is available for members of the ARA Section for New Professionals who have never attended an ARA conference or received an ARA bursary of any sort. The funds for this bursary are raised by crowdfunding.  Applications open on **Monday, 18 May 2026,** and will close at **5:00 pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026**. **Two** bursaries are open to members and non-members of the ARA. (If you are a speaker at ARA 2026 from a Black and/or Minority Ethnic background, you are eligible to apply for any ARA Diversity bursary) Applications open on **Monday, 18 May 2026,** and will close at **5:00 pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026**. **Four** bursaries are available through our Premier Conference Sponsor, [Ancestry](https://www.ancestry.co.uk/). These bursaries are available to archivists, including archive managers, company archivists, principal archivists, and collection managers from a local authority archive who have either never attended the ARA Conference before or have not attended in the last three years (i.e. were not at Bristol 2025, Birmingham 2024, Belfast 2023). Applications open on **Monday, 18 May 2026,** and will close at **5:00 pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026**. **One** bursary is available from [Conservation by Design](https://www.cxdinternational.com/). This bursary is open to members and non-members of the ARA. Tony is Senior Manager for Conservation and Collections Care at Durham University. Based at Palace Green Library, his team are responsible for preservation across the University’s varied museum, archive and library collections. He is an Icon Accredited Conservator specialising in archive and library materials with a particular interest in historical bookbinding practices. Having trained at Camberwell College and undertaken the ARA Archive Conservation Training Scheme, Tony has worked as a Conservator for both Essex and Cumbria County Councils before joining Durham University in 2020. 'Authenticity' ## AT A GLANCE ## PROGRAMME ## REGISTER ## ATTENDANCE ## CODE OF ## CONDUCT ## SUPPORTED BY: ## PREVIOUS CONFERENCE ## SPEAKERS & HIGHLIGHTS The theme for our conference will be **‘Authenticity'**.  All we need at this stage is a 500 word abstract for your individual presentation, panel or workshop. We expect that all presentations will be made in-person in Glasgow. The conference timeline is slightly more condensed than in previous years. We encourage delegates to review the key dates carefully and to submit registrations and abstracts as early as possible, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we finalise arrangements. We are delighted to confirm that ARA 2026 will be held at the Radisson Blu in Glasgow, and we very much look forward to returning to Scotland. We are excited to welcome delegates to this excellent venue and vibrant city for what promises to be a stimulating and engaging conference. As always, the three keynote talks will be carefully curated to align with the conference theme of *Authenticity*. Details of our keynote speakers will be announced in due course; please visit this website regularly for the latest updates and further information. The ARA Conference 2026, returning to a fully in-person format in Glasgow, will explore the theme of authenticity - a concept that has become increasingly complex in today’s Recordkeeping landscape... *Day 2: Thursday & Day 3: Friday will follow a similar format...* Registrations will open at the end of February 2026. We will take online registrations only via this website, so please return here for updates regarding registration types, fees and payment process. We want everyone to have a good and enjoyable experience at conference and we set out a code of conduct for all those attending whether they are delegates, staff, exhibitors or technicians. • We ask all our delegates to adhere to the code of conduct that respects everyone attending the conference and ensures their safety. • We do not tolerate: racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia or any other discriminatory behaviours. • We do not tolerate: bullying, harassment or unwelcome physical contact/ interaction, unwelcome verbal, written or visual conduct or interaction This Code of Conduct specifies principles to which all those attending the ARA Conference should adhere. We are delighted to be back in Scotland and are grateful for the excellent support of the Glasgow Convention Bureau in helping us plan an inclusive and engaging conference experience. Contact the organisers by [email](/contact) if you missed the deadline. The Archives and Records Association's Conference will be held in Glasgow in 2026. The theme for our conference will be ‘Authenticity'. As we return to a fully in-person conference for 2026, it feels appropriate to address the theme of authenticity - how do we approach the practices of Record Keeping in an age where ‘truth’ feels increasingly under fire? We've seen Heads of State alter, deny, and destroy archival records. If history is determined by the victor, how do we work with integrity and preserve the full truth when those in power may seek to quash it? Conversely, as Record keepers we have been described as 'Custodians of the Truth', but who's truth? How do we ensure fair and balanced representation, especially when some views feel so alien to us? How do we manage the legality of digitising records for Records Management purposes, when – for example - the digitised records supersede the 'original' items as the 'legal' copies? When original formats have a limited lifespan, either because of their inherent instability or technological obsolescence – how do we give people an authentic experience when accessing born-digital records? Is authenticity in fact the priority, or does access trump truth? There are also discussions to be had around the ethics of AI and machine-learning and its use – can it simplify tasks like metadata capture or transcription, increasing efficiency; or will it impact on data quality, dilute understanding, and lead to de-skilling of record keepers? The authenticity of the physical record can be viewed through conservation decision-making lens, but what are the implications of the treatments we undertake and the materials we use? Are we compromising authenticity, or broadening the narrative of what can be perceived as authentic? In an era marked by disinformation, contested histories, and rapid technological change, the concept of authenticity in recordkeeping has never been more complex—or more critical. How do we navigate truth, ethics, and recordkeeping in a Post-Truth World? And of course, we are open to many more ideas than this! All we need at this stage is a 500 word (max) abstract for your presentation, panel or workshop. We expect that all presentations will be made in-person in Glasgow. When you submit your proposal on-line you can let us know if your presentation is particularly aimed at a specific area of the record-keeping sector: We are looking for proposals that fit one of the formats listed below. We expect that all speakers deliver their presentations in person. From creating your account to pressing the submit button, you will find each step covered. All submissions must be made online via the submissions portals linked above. All submissions will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive your confirmation email please: All speakers will receive free conference registration for the day on which they are presenting. We are unable to pay accommodation costs, but speakers will be reimbursed travel expenses up to a maximum of £100. In addition, please note that speakers are eligible to apply for the regular Conference bursaries to support attendance at the wider conference. These are usually advertised in May. If invited, you will be asked to confirm your attendance as a speaker for the day you are asked to speak prior to the bursary round taking place, so please take this into account when planning. Anyone who has experience or expertise in working with records can submit a paper. Contributions are welcomed from across the UK and Ireland, and from colleagues in the global record-keeping community. And of course we welcome submissions from other sectors too. If you submit a proposal and this is accepted, you will be expected to attend in person in Glasgow in August 2026 to make your contribution. The use and misuse of records that have a dramatic impact on 'real life' - The digital record vs. the original record - what is the reader seeking to experience? Is one 'more' authentic than the other? - Who wields tools of authentication such as heritage science? What role does material analysis play in understanding collections? How can new technologies deepen this understanding? - Does interventive conservation treatment compromise authenticity? Best practice dictates use of sympathetic materials, emphasising reversibility, but what does it mean for treatment integrity when manufacturing processes of materials are changed, or accessibility is affected by external factors such as climate change? - What of inevitable changes to the item to preserve them and/or make them accessible? Is accessibility the enemy of authenticity? Glasgow is served by 3 international airports, with connections across the UK and the world: Glasgow is well connected by train from across the UK by 2 main stations: Avanti West Coast runs several daily services to London with a journey time of approximately 4 hours 30 minutes. The Caledonian Sleeper connects London to Glasgow with overnight services. Eurostar international high-speed railway service connects European mainland destinations to Glasgow via London (St Pancras station). ETAs will be mandatory for travel to the UK and are being introduced in several stages for different nationalities. Each individual visitor is responsible for ensuring they have their own correct authorisation to enter the UK. In an era marked by disinformation, contested histories, and rapid technological change, recordkeepers face critical questions about truth, ethics, and professional integrity. How do we safeguard balanced narratives when power dynamics influence documentation? What happens when digitisation and legal frameworks can elevate digital surrogates over original records? Does accessibility compromise authenticity, or can both coexist? How often do we consider authenticity when displaying items in exhibitions? Emerging technologies such as AI promise efficiency but raise concerns about data quality, bias, and the de-skilling of professionals. In education, are we properly preparing the next generations of professionals for the realities of working in the sector? Conservation practices, too, challenge notions of authenticity: how well do we balance interventions to preserve items with altering their essence? Beyond technical considerations, do we authentically embody evolving cultural perspectives and ethical imperatives such as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, are we still just paying these concepts lip service? This conference aims to explore and interrogate these tensions - between preservation and destruction, authenticity and interpretation, and professional values and practical realities - while considering how authenticity can be meaningfully embedded in theory, practice, and education. You can find the full [Call for Papers here](https://openingdoors-ara2026.eventsair.site/call-for-papers). The ARA Conference 2026 takes place 5-7 August at the Radisson Blu hotel in Glasgow, UK. The ARA conference is an annual event where colleagues from across the record-keeping sector and beyond can meet, share experiences, discuss and learn. It usually spans across four themed strands so hopefully there is something for everyone. **Everyone is welcome** - the friendly atmosphere of our conferences have is a point of great pride for us. The conference committee itself is made up of ARA staff and volunteers. ARA members take on the roles of Chair, Programme Co-ordinators and Comms officer, representing the ARA membership. We work alongside the professional events organisers – Opening Doors and Venues, who ensure the smooth planning and running of the conference – and our AV company – Andrew Mills Ltd, who, unsurprisingly, they take care of our AV needs. And finally CPL One who sort out exhibition sales so we can afford to run the conference! Planning the conference is a continual process that usually starts, with venue finding, over a year before we've even had the present conference. The next step is for the Chair to write the call for papers and this is then shared with the rest of the committee for test driving. ODV then build the website based on the call for papers and venue before we open for submissions. Once the call for papers closes, the shortlisting can begin and the programme can be built. After we have a good amount of speakers confirmed we can then open registration after carefully calculating delegate rates – our aim is always to break even – not profit. Amongst all of this the committee meets once a month, to go over the finer details such as menus, social events and accessibility needs. EDI and sustainability is at the heart of what we do and we are always seeking to improve on this where possible. The inherent instability or technological obsolescence of traditional formats may see us questioning how we can provide a user with an authentic experience, accessing often fragile items and born digital media. Considerations around physical displays, the use of surrogates etc might also fit our theme this year. Conservators could also reflect on the ethics in the use of AI and machine learning. **Individual papers** are a great opportunity to cover case studies in which authenticity has played a factor on your decision making. **Panel sessions** can be used to begin discussion around how us, as conservators, can begin to think about the ethical decisions we make around conservation treatments and the preventative conservation methods we employ to prolong the lives for the items we care for. **Workshops** are a wonderful opportunity for you to demonstrate treatment processes you have used and how these processes may affect, or not, the authenticity of the item itself. I encourage every one of you to consider submitting. Bring your case studies, your dilemmas, your experiments, your ethical reflections, and your research. The field needs your voice—thoughtful, honest, and grounded in the realities of conservation practice. A conservation workshop from our Bristol 2025 conference: Building Better Homes - Shirley Jones and Elizabeth Stettler I co-ordinate the conference programme for the archives, records, information governance and digital strands. Below I have what I look for when considering the abstracts we receive and the kinds of qualities that send an abstract to the top of the list when it comes time to actually build the programme. Key considerations. There are six qualities that tend to increase an abstract’s chances of being included in the final programme. An abstract does not have to hit each of these criteria to be successful, but it’s a useful framework to compare your abstract against in order to judge whether it’s ready to submit. Before you compose your abstract, try to picture the kind of delegate who would benefit from attending your session. Having this clearly indicated will help show the conference team where your paper should fit into the programme. And during the conference, your session will have a higher chance of attracting the right audience. Imagine the kind of challenges your target audience deals with – how can you write an abstract that convinces them you have the solution to their issues? **2\. How will the delegate benefit from attending your session.** This leads on from the first consideration. It’s not enough to tell delegates that your paper, workshop or panel will benefit them. Try to be specific about how. For example, will they walk away with a framework they can apply elsewhere? Or will they get a chance to take part in guided discussions? Or will they leave with a more rounded understanding of a topic or issue? Your abstract should focus on the central topic your session will be exploring. It’s good to cover if your session focuses on a specific collection or project, but try not to get too bogged down in the abstract by describing the collections you work with if it’s not absolutely relevant. Ideally, your session needs to have a central message or takeaway behind it and not just boil down to a description of a collection or project. Keeping asking yourself: Why does this matter beyond this project or this collection? **4\. Tie your abstract into the theme and don’t be afraid to make it obvious.** The call for papers is full of keywords and phrases you can poach for your abstract. They’re for your benefit. If they fit, use them. Longer abstracts aren’t always better abstracts. Don’t feel pressured to use every last word. Some of my favourites have been a fraction of the total wordcount. Also, avoid jargon and excessive use of acronyms unless they’re absolutely relevant. For one, it helps me get a good first impression of your abstract and what you want to deliver. Second – during the conference itself, a delegate might arrive at conference without a plan for which sessions to attend. They might not have time to read your abstracts. But they will see your title. It doesn’t need to be flashy and it shouldn’t mislead anyone, but it should make your offering crystal clear. Here is an example of a strong abstract from last year’s conference. It’s for a 60 minute workshop and was submitted by Anne Cornish, CEO of RIMPA Global. Based on the feedback, I think this was one of the most highly rated sessions we had that year. *Example submission by Anne Cornish, CEO of RIMPA Global, ARA Conference 2025* - the red highlights the parts I’d like to draw your attention to: **Future First: Shaping the Future of Our Industry (Workshop)** The need to evolve as an industry has never been more critical. In a world characterised by **rapid technological advancements, shifting societal expectations, and evolving workplace dynamics, the future of our profession hinges on our ability to adapt and innovate**. Now is the time to take decisive action to ensure the relevance and sustainability of archives and records and information management for generations to come. This interactive and engaging workshop presentation will challenge participants to think critically about the future of the industry and their role within it. **The session will explore and evaluate the key aspects of current practices, including the skills required to remain competitive**, the changes needed in practices and processes, and how we can reimagine the delivery of our services to meet evolving demands. Beyond operational shifts, the workshop will emphasise the importance of mindset, encouraging participants to adopt forward-thinking attitudes that embrace innovation and adaptability. Through **guided discussions, collaborative exercises, and thought-provoking activities, attendees will have the opportunity to share perspectives, identify challenges, and co-create strategies** to address the most pressing issues facing our industry. By examining how we work today and envisioning what we must do differently tomorrow**,** **this session will provide valuable insights and actionable takeaways** to help shape a thriving, future-ready profession. What makes this abstract strong is that it has a strong central premise, is clear about who its audience is, and lets us know what delegates can expect if they attend. I’ve highlighted the key parts here. The abstract begins with a central statement or issue: that rapid technological advancements and changes in social expectations and workplace dynamics are having an impact on our profession and Anne argues that we need to adapt. Anne then outlines the workshop session – that it will explore and evaluate key aspects of current practices and the skills required to remain competitive in today’s environment. The abstract also emphasises that mindset is as important as hard skills development. In the third and final paragraph, the abstract informs us that the workshop will involve guided discussions, collaborative exercises and thought-provoking activities and that the session will provide insights and actionable takeaways. Overall, this abstract is clearly written in plain English with no jargon and remains focused on a central argument throughout. It ties in well with that year’s theme of imagination and innovation by arguing that we need to **reimagine** the delivery of our services. It makes clear that delegates will be expected to contribute to discussions and do activities during the workshop. And it is spells out the benefits delegates will receive by participating. It's also well formatted with good grammar and spelling. Not every abstract needs to match this structure. But you can see how this example utilised the strategies I’ve discussed to effectively sell this workshop to our delegates and also to me as the person building these strands into the programme.
